Don't miss the cafe Louie On Sea in the Turner

Turner Contemporary

No visit to Margate is complete without stopping by the Turner Contemporary. Named after the famous artist J.M.W. Turner, who was inspired by the area's stunning seascapes, this iconic gallery is a beacon of contemporary art.

In 2024, Turner Contemporary is set to host a series of groundbreaking exhibitions featuring both established and emerging artists. From May-Sept of 2024 the Turner Contemporary will be running the first institutional exhibition in Europe dedicated to pioneering artist Ed Clark, who was a key member of the New York School of Abstraction. It will show drawings and paintings from his life of work from the 1940s-2000.

Carl Freedman Gallery

Another must-visit is the Carl Freedman Gallery, founded by influential curator and publisher Carl Freedman. Since relocating from London to Margate in 2019, the gallery has become a cornerstone of the town's artistic revival and sits next door to Tracey Emin’s Margate home and studios.

The space is known for showcasing cutting-edge contemporary art, with a focus on bold and provocative works, such as Vanessa Raw’s exhibition which runs from mid June - 8 Sept 2024. Her sensual large scale show, On Earth We Weren't Meant To Stay, will debut her large scale oil paintings.

QUENCH ART GALLERY

Located in the heart of Cliftonville, Quench Art Gallery is a vibrant space dedicated to showcasing contemporary art and run by local artists Lindsey Mendick, Gemma Pharo and Guy Oliver. Known for its diverse program and commitment to community engagement, Quench is a crucial part of Margate's artistic landscape. The gallery features a mix of solo and group exhibitions, providing a platform for both emerging and established artists.

Pie Factory Gallery, Margate

Pop into Pie Factory in the heart of Margate

THE PIE FACTORY

The Pie Factory is a versatile arts space located in Margate's vibrant Old Town. This former pie-making factory now hosts a wide range of exhibitions, performances, and events, supporting both local and international artists. The gallery's flexible space allows for a diverse program that includes everything from traditional painting to experimental installations.

Liminal Gallery

Don’t miss one of the smallest art galleries in Margate, halfway up the hill from the Turner Contemporary. This old shop front is home to a small exhibition and sometimes an even smaller one, inside a cupboard! Liminal Gallery focuses on showcasing emerging artists pushing the boundaries of their mediums. With a dynamic programme of exhibitions and events, Liminal Gallery is a must-visit for anyone interested in cutting-edge art and fresh perspectives.


Salon Margate

Another converted shop front is now home to the vibrant (and also tiny) Salon Margate in the middle of Northdown Road’s revival. Salon Margate is a unique blend of art gallery and creative hub, offering a diverse range of exhibitions and cultural events that pack a punch despite its size. It often runs group exhibitions featuring local artists such as Charlie Evaristo Boyce and ceramicist Jonathan Hughes. Don’t miss the private views where everyone just gathers on the pavement.
