About Don’t Miss Margate

Founded in 2023 in Margate, for Margate.

Don’t Miss…Margate is your one stop shop for events listings, local news, tourist info and insider tips to make your time in Margate the best, whether you live here, are visiting or are scoping it out for a move.

Margate can feel like a liminal space of possibilities, strung along this thin chalk cliff line balanced between the edge of England and the sea.

It has attracted artists, musicians, lovers, fighters, outcasts, pirates, refugees, Londoners and everyone else who values space, horizons and new possibilities.

Margate now is on the up again, regularly rated as one of the coolest seaside towns in the UK, a proud queer / LGBTQIA+ friendly community, a town full of grassroots activism, boundary pushing art and culture.

If it’s a bit niche, it’s here, with bells on.

I started Don’t Miss…Margate in Oct 2023, after a 20 year career as a magazine editor (Time Out, Lonely Planet, BBC and more), journalist and author came to a pause thanks to an ongoing illness. In my boredom stuck at home, I reflected that for all the crazy things happening in town, there was no central point to learn about and access them.

A weekly newsletter was born. The Don’t Miss…Margate weekly what’s on guide.

A few months later it started attracting a huge number of subscribers and by April 2024 I started offering a voluntary paid subscription (£4 / month) for all the week’s events listings and news.

Don’t Miss…Margate the website came online in September 2024, after realising there are so many other ways the wonderful businesses, community groups, art galleries and more of this town need to be promoted, and made accessible to anyone wanting to dive into Margate’s tides of inspiration.

Check out our directory of shops, pubs & bars, hotels and so on.

This small coastal town packs a mighty punch and I’m so proud to be playing my part, joining the dots, helping more people find the exhibitions, events, venues, community groups, yoga, gigs, pop ups and so on that make this town so, so special.

This is for you Margate. Don’t miss out.

we are a proud social enterprise

We are a bit different to other media brands. We are set up as a social enterprise, on a mission to reduce social isolation, restore civic pride and act as a public information service for the residents and visitors of Margate.

Thanks to the support of Social Enterprise Kent’s Boost programme we received a grant to help us launch. We are also a proud member of Social Enterprise UK.

Up to 20% of our revenue from subscriptions and sponsorships is donated to our Community Solidarity Fund. Micro-grants are distributed three times a year to help community groups put on more free events in Margate. Want to help? Pay for a DMM newsletter subscription here.

About GEORGINA WILSON-POWELL

I have lived in Margate for more than five years, drawn here by the potential to afford a home by the sea, similar to where I grew up and needing to see a horizon after decades living in tiny flats in cities.

I’m a magazine editor, author of 3 books on sustainable living and several travel guides and when I’m not working on Don’t Miss…Margate I run an editorial and content marketing agency working with both global purpose-led brands and local Margate businesses.

When I’m not working you can find me swimming in Walpole Bay Tidal Pool, walking my dog Maggie May with my wife, or hanging out in any of the Cliftonville bars. See you around Margate!
